Report of Mr. Poinsett on the Condition of South America

Description

A report submitted to the Secretary of State John Quincy Adams by Joel R. Poinsett on his observations of the various regions in South America. The report was submitted after his return tot he United States in 1818. He left in late 1810 and arrived in Buenos Aires in January 1811. While there he promoted the cause of the revolutionaries who sought independence from Spain. After five years he returned to Charleston South Carolina where he submitted this report. The report is part of the American State Papers. It provides detailed descriptive historical, demographic, as well as social and economic information. It is an excellent example of a report whose purpose was to promote the expansion of U.S. business in the region.
